On October 10, 2021, Chaz and Maureen Taft (Weber) experienced the most unimaginable tragedy. Their youngest son Cameron (22 months) suffered a near fatal drowning accident. Due to the quick response from family, friends and first responders, Cameron was revived in the ambulance on his way to Elmhurst Hospital. He was immediately transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where Cam spent the first nine days at Lurie, on a ventilator, fighting for his life. Maureen and Chaz were given news no parent wants to hear: they needed to make a decision. Maureen was taught “Where there’s life, there’s hope.” Cam had life in him, and they would begin the fight of a lifetime towards recovery.
After three weeks at Lurie, Cameron was transferred to inpatient care at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, where he remained until December 23. Within days of being released from Shirley Ryan inpatient rehab, Cam traveled to New Orleans where he received Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT). Cameron has also made two journeys to Phoenix, Arizona for stem cell transplants, and to receive intense functional neurology therapies. None of these therapies are covered by insurance.
In the time since Cameron’s accident, Cam continues outpatient therapy: HBOT, physical therapy, occupational therapy, MNRI and speech. Cam has experienced some medical setbacks along the way. He has been hospitalized several times in recent months due to GI issues, breathing issues and pneumonia. Cam astounds us every day with his progress, but he has a long road ahead of him! Due to the insurmountable medical bills, and Cameron’s future needs, we are asking for any support, whether a donation or a prayer. We thank you from the bottoms of our hearts.
